Croton Falls, NY, September 20, 2020 – The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus joins with all Americans in mourning the loss of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Andy Pelosi, Executive Director shared the following:

“The Campaign joins with Americans across our nation in mourning the loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, also known as the “notorious RBG” by millions of women around the world. Despite obstacles for women to purse a legal career in the 1950’s beginning then and over the course of her career, Ginsberg championed gender equality and women’s rights, while making significant legal advances for women under the Equal Protection Clause.

Some of Justice Ginsburg’s high profile cases during her long tenure on the court included these issues in the majority: equal protection for women to gain admission at Virginia Military Institute; support for persons with mental disabilities under the ADA; the environment; and finding that the 8th Amendment’s ban on excessive fines also applied to local and state governments. While Justice Ginsburg was also known for strong dissents in cases that included reproductive rights and equal pay.

In the area of gun policy, Justice Ginsburg believed that common sense gun laws provided a safer environment for all Americans and sided with the dissent in the landmark case of D.C. vs. Heller, decided by the Court in 2008. While an individual right was held in Heller, the majority also said, in part, … [The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings].

Despite multiple and severe challenges to her health, Justice Ginsburg served for over 27 years on the Supreme Court. We honor her life and commitment to equal justice for all.  Thank you for your service to our nation and rest in power.”
