FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Croton Falls, NY) The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus issued this statement marking 15 years since the Virginia Tech Massacre that took place on April 16, 2007.
Said Andy Pelosi, executive director of The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus, “On this solemn day, 15 years later, we pay our respects to the families of the victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre. After a lone gunman killed 32 people and injured another 17 in the deadliest college shooting in American history, our hearts remain broken for the friends and loved ones of the victims and survivors, whose lives have been forever changed by this tragedy.
“We are living in an environment where gun deaths and injuries are at record highs. Despite this fact, the gun lobby marches across the US weakening state laws by eliminating permits for concealed handguns and seeking to force public higher education institutions to allow guns on campus. We all must remain vigilant and fight on, knowing that more guns in more hands will not make us safer.
“We also renew the call for our society to push back against the gun lobby’s agenda of forcing colleges and universities to unconditionally accept loaded, concealed handguns on campus. If we are serious about providing safe campus environments for students, faculty and staff, we must reduce risks (especially for vulnerable students) – not increase them by allowing the presence of loaded, concealed guns.
“Let’s work together to find ways to save lives in our communities. We will honor with action those lives we lost at Virginia Tech, and those lives we continue to lose to firearms everyday.”
