On the last night of session (March 20th), the Georgia General Assembly passed what we called “the Guns Everywhere” bill (HB 60).
This outrageous piece of legislation by gun lobby-backed lawmakers will allow loaded, concealed handguns into K-12 schools, bars, airports, public libraries AND even give convicted felons immunity from prosecution under Georgia’s Stand Your Ground laws. Find out who voted in favor of HB 60 in the Georgia House and Senate.1 The results may surprise you.
Over the last year, we fought hard to keep our schools and campuses safe — and to keep guns only in the hands of trained law enforcement officers. Despite last week’s public safety defeat for all Georgians, we do have some good news:
- Guns on campus was defeated for the third year in a row;
- Houses of worship are now allowed to opt in if they want congregants to carry concealed weapons (prior bill language would have forced them to opt out), and
- Georgians laid the foundation to fight back against the gun lobby
Gov. Deal has pledged to sign HB 60 into law, and as early as next week. Please let him know that the “Guns Everywhere” bill puts the lives of all Georgians at risk. Tell him that he must veto the bill. Call the Governor now at 404-656-1776.
Don’t let the image above of gun lobby-backed Rep. Alan Powell and other lawmakers define what happened last week. Together, we did make progress and it’s up to all of us to continue working together to build a safer Georgia.
Thanks for all you do,
