The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus Supports Action to Repeal Guns on Campus Law in Georgia

(Atlanta, GA) – Yesterday, a lawsuit was filed in Fulton County in opposition to the recently enacted law (HB 280), which requires Georgia’s public colleges and universities to allow people with concealed weapons permits – including out of state 18 year olds – to carry loaded, concealed handguns in many places on campus, with limited exceptions.

Andy Pelosi, Executive Director of The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus issued the following statement:

“We support the courageous step taken by faculty to challenge the state’s ill-conceived and dangerous Guns on Campus law.  Guns have no place in an academic environment, and in Georgia and across the country, vast majorities of college presidents, faculty, students, and university police chiefs continue to oppose guns on campus.  We trust that the courts in this case will recognize the Georgia General Assembly’s dangerous over-reach for what it is, and reestablish a safe learning environment for faculty, students, staff and visitors at all of Georgia’s public universities.  Georgia’s constitution wisely leaves decisions like this to educators, not politicians.”
