The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus Statement on the Violent Events at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, TX

“We first want to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, students, and the entire Santa Fe community, in connection with this morning’s horrific act where several people were tragically killed and injured.

While details about this event are still unfolding, including the number of casualties and methods used, one thing we do know is that our nation’s schools must be havens for learning where our students, faculty and administrators can feel safe from the threat of any type of violence.

No parent in the United States should have to worry about the safety of their sons and daughters once they place them on the bus or drop them off at school.  We must do more to protect our children by providing essential services such as counseling, to ensure that we are able to recognize when a student may be in trouble before he or she becomes a threat to our schools. As our nation’s schools continue to face the threat of violence, our state and federal officials continue to only offer thoughts and prayers.”
