(Croton Falls, NY): The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus released the following statement after the Wyoming Senate voted down guns on campus legislation, which had recently passed in the House.

STATEMENT FROM THE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP GUNS OFF CAMPUS

“Earlier today, the Wyoming State Senate defeated HB 136 (guns on campus) by a vote 17-13 without any debate.  Many people had rightly feared that Wyoming would become the next state to force colleges and universities to allow loaded, concealed weapons on campus.

While we applaud the 17 Senators who voted in opposition to HB 136, it’s important to note the role of Wyoming’s higher education leaders in this debate.  The college and university Presidents publicly banded together with a tempered denounciation of the legislation stating that decisions to permit weapons on campus should be left to “local control” and that there are other ways to ensure safety on Wyoming’s campuses. Today’s victory for public safety is an important one for the students, faculty, staff and visitors on all of Wyoming’s campuses.

Following Alaska, Wyoming became the second state in 2017 to defeat guns on campus legislation.  Despite these early victories, the gun lobby is pushing similar bills in a number of states across the country, including: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Carolina, while Kansas and Maryland have bills to keep guns off campus.”
