FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Dallas, TX): The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus (The Campaign) issued a brief statement in response to University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Decision on Campus Carry Recommendations.
“The Campaign applauds today’s decision by the University of Texas System Board of Regents, where they voted to uphold UT Austin’s request that faculty offices not be subject to presence of concealed weapons. The BOR’s decision on this particular issue (sanctity of faculty offices) reinforces the Campaign’s briefing materials submitted in advance to President Fenves and the BOR.
As The Campaign argued, the intention of SB 11 was to provide some degree of deference to individual universities and colleges to set campus carry policies, so long as these recommendations do not amount to a general prohibition of firearms. In the end, UT- Austin’s decision to ban guns in faculty offices complies with the requirements that SB 11 and the Texas Penal Code set out, for providing notice that firearms remain prohibited in select segments of a campus.
While The Campaign approves of the decision today to allow faculty at UT Austin the ability choose to keep guns out of their offices, we still believe that additional areas on campus (including classrooms) could have also been deemed areas of exclusion for Texas permit holders.”
The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus was founded in 2008 to urge colleges and universities to band together to oppose the gun lobby’s agenda to push loaded, concealed guns onto college campuses. To date, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and more than 420 colleges and universities in 42 states have joined the Campaign. Follow us on Facebook and on Twitter.
