(Croton Falls, NY) – Following the tragic events yesterday at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where two people were killed and several injured, The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus issued the following statement:

“We first want to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, students, and the entire UNCC community, in connection with yesterday’s tragic campus shooting that left Ellis Parlier, 19 and Riley Howell, 21, deceased, and injured Drew Pescaro, 19; Emily Houpt, 23; Sean DeHart, 20, and Rami Alramadhan, 20.

“It is important to note the quick response of trained law enforcement/campus police department personnel who ran towards the crisis, and were able to quickly apprehend the shooter before even more people were killed or injured.  According to law enforcement, the suspect was charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on an educational property and discharging a firearm on an educational property.

 “At this point in time, we do not know where the shooter sourced the firearm and magazines or his motivations. The fact that UNCC prohibits firearms on campus means that, in addition to the multiple charges already levied, the school’s current policy allows the basis for additional criminal charges to be brought against the perpetrator and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“In closing, we encourage North Carolinians to contact North Carolinians Against Gun Violence (www.ncgv.org) for information and ways to help stop the epidemic of gun violence in their state.
